Spices Board (Ministry of Commerce, Government of India) together with GS1, launched an electronic platform for implementing sustainability, traceability and e-commerce for the farmers involved in production of spices like chilli and turmeric.
The project aims for the following:
- Aggregation of farmer related data.
- Aggregation and dissemination of product data.
- Aggregation and dissemination of process related data.
- Information services.
The broad objectives of The Pilot for eSpiceBazaar for Spices Board were as follows:

Farmer Database | The Chilli/Turmeric farmer database will include: name, address, Number of farms, area cultivated, variety cultivated, season of planting, harvesting, production details, agronomic practices including pesticides and fertilizers applied, marketing mechanisms, etc. This database will help in traceability of the produce as well as grouping of the produces according to need of the buyer. |
Traceability | Traceability from the product to the farm level Barcoding / labelling of the product with unique ID of the farmer (GLN or Global Location Number). |
Quality Certification | Disseminate information to the stakeholders regarding various quality certifications required by them for trade purpose. |
Ecommerce Portal | Provide a platform for sellers and buyers for facilitation of trade and enable traders to procure directly from farmers. |
Farmer Guidance | Farmer level guidance based on GAP recommendations regarding the right amount fertilizers, pesticides etc |
Market information for Farmers | Provision to provide inputs to farmers on price of inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, pesticides etcRequirements of different grades of Chilli/Turmeric in different markets etc. |
Metrological Forecast | Web based meteorological details to farmers of the locality on a regular basis after collecting the data from different sources. |
Farmer Education and Training | Trained scouts will visit farmer’s plot at regular interval and record the incidence of pests, diseases, etc. This information will be forwarded to the kisan call centers, and experts and the recommendations received from them will be passed on to the farmers with minimum time delay. |
