New Zealand supermarket Pak ‘n Save Blenheim has recalled some ready-to-eat meat products due to the detection of listeria.
The 14 affected products include honey-baked ham, luncheon and sausages with a packed date of between October 6 and 11.
New Zealand Food Safety food compliance services national manager Melinda Sando told Stuff that customers who bought the products should return them to Pak ‘n Save Blenheim so they can get a full refund.
The recall does not include meat products from manufacturers sold in original packaging.
“The problem is not with the manufacturer and the product they’ve supplied, the problem has occurred in the delicatessen when they’ve been slicing and packing, and it’s isolated to the products identified in the recall notice,” she said.
NZFS said listeriosis has an incubation period of two to three weeks, or longer, before symptoms appeared, NZFS said.
It could cause mild infection such as diarrhoea and flu-like symptoms.
“Listeria is a tricky bug because it’s in the environment, so for any sort of food business that’s handling and processing some of those foods, it’s a matter of making sure there is good cleaning and sanitising,” Sando said.
NZFS is working with Pak ‘n Save Blenheim to find out the cause of the issue.
