Items include children’s drinking bottles, toys and a mattress
Most shoppers may be more familiar with supermarket food recalls than products from major retailers, but it does happen.
Despite the fact shop items have been rigorously tested to meet stringent health and safety standards before they go on sale, occasionally something gets flagged up – usually just as a precautionary measure – and a product recall is issued.
But sometimes, companies will recall an item if they discover a quality issue, often meaning that it could pose a danger to customers.
Over the last couple of weeks, stores including John Lewis, TK Maxx, Wilko and B&Q have issued urgent product recalls.
If you missed them, here’s the complete list of product recalls and what to do if you’ve bought one of the items.
John Lewis
Express.co.uk reports that John Lewis has issued a recall for a cotbed mattress due to safety fears – though you can still use it by following the new instructions.
The notice affects any Dual Purpose Pocket Spring Cotbed Mattress that was bought between June 2019 and June 2020 from johnlewis.com.
In a statement, John Lewis said: “We have recently retested this mattress, and unfortunately it has failed a firmness test on the newborn side which means it does not comply with legal requirements.
“The other side has passed the test and is safe to use regardless of age. Therefore, we ask that with immediate effect, you rotate the mattress to use the 12 month+ side. This can be identified by unzipping the cover.”
Customers can also arrange a replacement and a refund by contacting the store on 01698 545 160.
“We will arrange for the collection and disposal of your existing mattress in a responsible way. We are obliged to ensure the mattress is not used any more, and does not find its way on to secondary markets,” the statement read.”
John Lewis apologised for any inconvenience caused.
TK Maxx
TK Maxx is recalling two children’s drinks bottles over fears they could pose a choking hazard.
Issuing a product recall notice for the Tri Coastal Design Children’s Drink Bottles, the retailer urged customers to stop using the bottles and return them to a store for a full refund.
The statement read: “TK Maxx have identified a quality issue with selected Children’s Drink Bottles created by Tri Coastal Design. There are four designs of the product – robots, dinosaurs and two designs with unicorns.
“The product was on sale in TK Maxx stores between December 2019 and March 2020.
“We have found that in certain circumstances it is possible for the rubber nib inside the lid to detach and be swallowed which may pose a choking hazard.
“The safety of our customers is very important to us and we are taking this action as a precaution.”

Wilko
Wilko is recalling a popular children’s toy due to safety fears.
The recall is for the Safari Buddies tambourine in various colours, which has the item code 0417368/7.
However, it only applies to certain batch codes, which can be found on the inside of the tambourine’s frame.
The affected batch numbers are 190620, 190701, 190715, and 191125.
In a statement, Wilko said: “We have identified that in certain circumstances, the pins that secure the cymbals can become detached, leading to a potential safety issue.
“As a precautionary measure we are therefore advising customers that have purchased the tambourine with the above batch codes to stop using the product immediately, keep it away from children, and return it to any store for a full refund.”

B&Q
B&Q has issued a recall on its Masterlite B22-E27 lampholder converters due to fears they could cause an electric shock.
The affected products had the barcode number 5014838904114 and were on sale from October 2019 – March 2020.
In a statement, B&G warned its customers: “There is a risk of electric shock resulting from direct contact with internal live parts which could occur if you attempt to replace an E27 lamp without first switching off the mains supply.
“If you have purchased any of these converters, please contact the below helpline for further assistance.”

Hasbro
Hasbro is also recalling two of its Nerf Super Soaker water guns.
The Super Soaker XP20 and Super Soaker XP 30 are both sold at various stores in the UK and across Europe.
Retailers including Amazon, Aldi and Hamleys sell the water pistols from as little as £9.
However, the product is being recalled due to a problem with the ink on the label.
On its website, Hasbro said: “The decorative sticker on the water tank of the Super Soaker XP 20 and Super Soaker XP 30 water blasters may contain levels of lead in the ink that exceed regulatory limits. The presence of lead is limited to the decorative sticker affixed to the water tank of the blasters.”
Customers should stop using the product and check online to see if they have one of the affected items.
