Spices, herbs recalled for possible salmonella contamination

The U.S. Federal Drug Administration recently announced recalls from two companies – Red Monkey Foods, Inc. and Sauer Brands Inc. – of herbs and spices that may be contaminated with salmonella.

Red Monkey Foods, Inc. is voluntarily recalling select organic parsley as part of a recall initiated by High Quality Organics after a sample was tested by a customer and was found to be potentially contaminated with salmonella.

A portion of the lot recalled by High Quality Organics was supplied to Red Monkey Foods Inc., and subsequently repacked into consumer containers for parsley.

To date, there have been no consumer complaints or reported cases of salmonella in connection with these products, according to the FDA. The potentially affected products were sold to retailers across the United States.

No other “Best by” dates are being recalled.

Sauer Brands Inc. is also voluntarily recalling The Spice Hunter Products due to the potential presence of salmonella, according to an FDA recall notice.

Sauer said it isn’t aware of any reports of illness to date related to the recalled products.

RECENT RECALLS.Kimberly-Clark is recalling its Cottonelle Flushable Wipes and Cottonelle GentlePlus Flushable Wipes sold in the United States, due to the potential presence of bacteria, according to a recall notice on the company’s website.

On Sept. 2, Sunshine Mills announced a recall of certain pet food products after a retail product sample was found by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture & Forestry to contain an unsafe level of aflatoxin.

On Oct. 8, the company expanded the recall to include additional products, which can still be on the market or in homes.
